Beach combing - walk miles of unspoiled beaches. At low tide, discover formations of holes and caves and starfish of all colors, clinging to the rocks, clam beds in the rocks, mussels growing in large formations, sea urchins, small crab, Japanese floats, beautiful drift wood and gravel beds where you could find agate, jasper and jade. Fishing - surf fish on the beach just below the Villa, or fish and crab on the dock at the port of Port Orford. Alternatively, view or purchase the catch of the day from the numerous fishing boats returning in the afternoon. Being one of the oldest town sites in Coos and Curry counties, it has a long history as a fishing and lumber port. Fishing boats can't be moored in the harbor due to it being unprotected from southerly winds. So, a daily activity at the harbor is hoisting fishing boats in and out of the ocean. Whale watching - whales can be spotted many times throughout the year, with major migrations in the winter and early spring months. You may also see dolphins or turtles swimming and playing in the surf. Surf boarding, boogey boarding, sea kayaking and windsurfing are all popular recreational activities in the surf off Battle Rock Beach. Garrison Lake and wetlands offers a special place to view great blue heron and other birds. It also offers a dock for freshwater fishing, a small park and picnic area. Heads State Park - this
life saving station was built in the 1930's. The area offers many unique hiking
trails. The town of Port Orford
offers a variety of unique shops, studios and galleries, which exhibit a selection
of crafts by local artisans, such as quilting, basketry, glass blowing,
painting, and myrtlewood. There is a variety of quaint shops and a
selection of great restaurants and lounges. Other Activities/Sightseeing within the Vicinity The Elk and Sixes rivers are well
known throughout the Pacific Northwest for their fall and winter steelhead and
salmon fishing, as well as trout, in season. Located just a few miles north of
Port Orford, you can also drive or cycle alongside these rivers and view the
canyons, lush vegetation and beautiful scenery. Golf - a Scottish style championship golf course has just been built along the beach in Bandon. There are also other public courses in Bandon and Gold Beach, as well as private courses in the area. Hiking - a hike up the three mile trail to the top of Humbug Mountain rewards you with impressive vistas of the Oregon coast. The hike through the exquisite unspoiled forests include groves of the rare Port Orford cedar. For the less energetic, Humbug State Park has a picnic area, as well as a trail that leads to the black sands of Humbug Beach. Cape Blanco State Park - located 11 miles north of Port Orford, the 1,880 acre park is next to Oregon's oldest and highest lighthouse, built in 1870. Visitors can visit the lighthouse or enjoy the black sand ocean beach, fishing, hiking, camping and picnicking. Hughes House - near Cape Blanco, the restored Hughes House, built in 1898, is operated by the state of Oregon as a museum. This two story Victorian house is open for tours during summer months.
